System76 have just released a new version of their popular Linux distribution, Pop!_OS. Using Ubuntu 20.10 as it’s base and shipping with a more up to date version of the GNOME desktop, 3.38.1 makes for a very polished release. It’s also using a new kernel which is version 5.8. The new ISO size is around 2.2GB and the installation is quick and pain free and will be complete in under 5-10 minutes.
The new features and improvements I am most impressed by is the improvements made to Pop shell. You can now add ‘floating window exceptions’ which means when you’re in tiling mode you can choose specific application windows to float. You can now also stack windows on top of each other which is incredibly useful and reminds a little bit of the stacking features of the Haiku operating system. Overall I’m starting to enjoy Pop!_OS more and more with every new release. It manages to ship a user friendly distribution that users of any experience should enjoy. It does more than enough to distinguish itself from other distributions using the same Ubuntu base and has solidified it’s spot as a worthy OS in the ‘distroverse’.
